Verse 45 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 14

English: Zi Lu asked about being a gentleman. Confucius said:"Cultivate yourself and treat people with respect." "Is that enough?" "Cultivate yourself and put individuals at ease." "Is that enough?" Confucius replied:"Cultivate yourself to people at ease. This is something even Yao⁽¹⁾ and Shun⁽¹⁾ found it difficult to do so."

Modern: 子路问君子之道。孔子说：“提高自己的修养，而对人敬重。” “这样就够了吗？” “提高自己的修养，而使人安逸。” “这样就够了吗？” 孔子说：“提高自己的修养，而使百姓安逸。提高自己的修养，而使百姓安逸，就是帝尧帝舜也没有做到。”

Original: 子路问君子。子曰：“修己以敬。” 曰：“如斯而已乎？”曰：“修己以安人。” 曰：“如斯而已乎？”曰：“修己以安百姓。修己以安百姓，尧、舜其犹病诸。”
