Verse 4 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 13

English: Fan Chi asked about agriculture. Confucius said:"The farmer is better than me." Fan Chi asked about cultivating vegetables, and Confucius replied:" The vegetable farmer is better than me." After Fan Chi left, Confucius commented:"Fan Chi is such a short-sighted man. When those above are devoted to rites, the people will not venture to become disrespectful. When those above are devoted to righteousness, the people will not venture to become non supporting. When those above are devoted to integrity, the people will not venture to become dishonest.If those above are able to achieve all three, people from everywhere will come and would bring their children as well. Is there a need for learn agriculture then?"

Modern: 樊迟请教如何耕稼。孔子说：“我不如老农夫。” 樊迟请教如何种菜。孔子说：“我不如老菜农。” 樊迟退出后，孔子说：“樊迟真是胸无大志。居于上层执政地位的人提倡礼仪，没有人民敢不恭敬；居于上层执政地位的人爱好义理，没有人民敢不服从；居于上层执政地位的人崇尚诚信，没有人民敢不诚实。能够做到这样，则四方的百姓都会背着孩子到来，那有何必自己耕稼？”
