Verse 25 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 7

English: Confucius said:"I doubt I will meet a sage. I would be content to meet a gentleman." Confucius continued:"I doubt I will meet a good man, I would be content to meet a principled man. It is hard for a man to be principled if he lacks capabilities but pretends to have it, or if he lacks knowledge but pretend to be well-versed or lives in poverty but pretends to live in riches."

Modern: 孔子说:“圣人,我没缘份见到;那么能够见到才德出众的君子,也是值得高兴。”又说:“善人,我没缘份见到;那么见到固守德操的人,也就心满意足。然而世间尽多的是伪善之人;缺少德能装作德高望重、无实学却炫耀自己博学多识、穷困潦倒却装作富足,这些人是不可能固守德操的。”

Original: 子曰:“圣人,吾不得而见之矣;得见君子者,斯可矣。”子曰:“善人,吾不得而见之矣;得见有恒者,斯可矣。亡而为有,虚而为盈,约而为泰,难乎有恒乎。”
