Verse 24 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 13

English: Zi Gong asked:"To be loved by everyone, what do you say?" Confucius said:" It is not enough." "To be hated by everyone, what do you say?" Confucius said:" It is not enough, it is not equal to being loved by good men and hated by those not good."

Modern: 子贡问：“同乡的人都喜欢他，怎么样？” 孔子说：“还不行。” “那同乡的人都憎恶他，怎么样？” 孔子答道：“还不行，总不如让乡中的好人喜欢，乡中的坏人憎恶。”

Original: 子贡问曰：“乡人皆好之，何如？”子曰：“未可也。”“乡人皆恶之，何如？ ” 子曰：“未可也。不如乡人之善者好之，其不善者恶之。”
