Verse 25 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 14
English: Chen Chen Zi(1) had Duke Jian of State of Qi assassinated. Confucius cleansed himself before attending court. Reporting to Duke Ai of State of Lu, he said:"Chen Heng has assassinated his lord. I asked that we send troops to punish him." Duke Ai said:"Report it to the three families(2)." Confucius said:"Following as I do in the footsteps of officials, I dared not withhold my report. Yet my lord said:'Report it to the three families.'" The report was made, but to no avail. Confucius said:"Following as I do in the footsteps of officials, I dared not withhold my report."
Modern: 陈成子(一)弑杀简公(二)。孔子沐浴后上朝，向鲁哀公报告说：“陈恒弑杀其君，请出兵讨伐。” 哀公说：“向孟孙、叔孙、季孙三人报告吧！” 孔子说：“因为我曾经跟在官员后面，所以不敢不报告。君主说：‘向孟孙、叔孙、季孙(三)三人报告吧！’” 孔子向三人报告，他们不应允。孔子说：“因为我曾经跟在官员后面，所以不敢不报告。”
Original: 陈成子弑简公。孔子沐浴而朝，告于哀公曰：“陈恒弑其君，请讨之。”公曰：“告夫三子。” 孔子曰：“以吾从大夫之后，不敢不告也。君曰‘告夫三子’者。” 之三子告，不可。孔子曰：“以吾从大夫之告，不敢不告也。”
