English: Zi Gong asked:"How can one be considered learned?" Confucius replied:"Have a sense of shame, and when sent on diplomatic mission, do not disgrace the lord. Such can be considered a learned man." "What type of person ranks next?" "Being praised for filial piety in its clan, being praised for brotherly love by villagers." "What type of person ranks next?" "A man who insists on keeping his word and seeing his actions through to the end can, perhaps, qualify to come next, even though he shows a stubborn petty-mindedness." "What do you think of those that are in public office?" Confucius said:"Oh they have such limited capacity, they hardly count."

Modern: 子贡问：“如何做才可称作为有才识修养的人呢？” 孔子答道：“行事要有羞耻之心。出使他国，不辜负国君使命。这样就能够称得上是有才德的人。” 子贡问：“比这次一等的人是什么样的？”宗族的人称赞他孝顺，故乡的人称赞他敬爱兄弟。” “比这又次一等的人是什么样的？” “说话必定有信用，行事必定有结果，虽然固执地行这两种行为；也可说是次一等的人。” 子贡问：“现在从政的人有怎么样？” “器量斗筲^(一)一般的人，算得甚么？”
