Verse 17 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 14
English: Zi Lu asked:"Duke Huan of State of Qi killed Lord Jiu(1) and Zhao Hu(2) died with his lord but Guan Zhong(3) did not." Zi Lu added:"So is Guan Zhong benevolent?" Confucius said:"It was through the capabilities of Guan Zhong that Duke Huan was able to unite the lords many a times without using military force. Such is a show of benevolence. Such is a show of benevolence."
Modern: 子路说：“齐桓公杀死公子纠(一)，召忽(二)为此而死，但管仲(三)却没有因此而死。”又说：“管仲不够仁德吗？” 孔子说：“桓公多次会合诸侯，却不必动用武力，全赖管仲；这正是他仁德之处，这正是他仁德之处呀！”
Original: 子路曰：“桓公杀公子纠，召忽死之，管仲不死。”曰：“未仁乎？”子曰：“桓公九合诸侯，不以兵车，管仲之力也。如其仁！如其仁！”
