Verse 10 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 7

English: Confucius said to Yan Yuan:" Only you and I have the ability to go forward when employed and to stay out of sight when set aside." Zi Lu asked:"If you are leading a war expedition, who would you take with?" Confucius replied:" Not one that would try to fight a tiger with bare hands or try to wade across a river without aid or has no regrets dying during the expedition. I would take anyone who , when faced with task, does meticulous planning and devise plots, and is capable of successful expedition."

Modern: 孔子对颜渊说：“得到国家任用，我就推行我的政治主张；不得任用，我就退隐静处，远避世事；只有我和你能够做到这样。” 子路问：“先生如果统帅军队，谁可以跟您共事？” 孔子答道：“徒手跟猛虎搏斗，徒步涉水渡河，就是死去也不后悔；这种人我不会和他共事。跟我共事的人，遇事必定战战兢兢，善用计谋，而又能够完成任务。”

Original: 子谓颜渊曰：“用之则行，舍之则藏，惟我与尔有是夫！”子路曰：“子行三军，则谁与？”子曰：“暴虎冯河，死而无悔者，吾不与也。必也临事而惧，好谋而成者也。”
