Verse 1 of Analects of Confucius Chapter 5

English: Confucius said of Gong Ye Chang⁽¹⁾:"Can betroth my daughter to him,although he was tied with black rope⁽²⁾, it was not his crime." He married his daughter to Gong Ye Chang.

Confucius said of Nan Rong⁽³⁾:"When the state has the Way, he is not abandoned. When the state does not follow the Way, he is free from punishment and persecution."He married his elder brother's daughter to him.

Modern: 孔子谈到公冶长^(一)，道：“可嫁他一女，他虽然下过牢狱，但不是他的罪过。”于是把女儿嫁给他。

孔子谈到南容^(二)，道：“国家有道，他不会被废弃;国家无道，他可避过刑法杀戮。”于是把子女嫁给他。

Original: 子谓公冶长：“可妻也，虽在缧绁^(三)之中，非其罪也！”以其子妻之。

子谓南容，“邦有道，不废；邦无道，免于刑戮。”以其兄之子妻之。
