There are eight undesired characteristics of a general and they are:
- An insatiable greed for material gains.
- Jealous of talented, capable people.
- Believe rumors and is close to those who knows how to sweet-talk or spread rumors.
- Able to assess enemy's situation but able to accurately assess his own.
- Indecisive
- Indulge in vices
- Fake, scheming and timid.
- Sly, arrogant and do not act according to policies set out.

将帅之道，有八种弊端：
- 第一：对财务的需求永不满足，贪得无厌。
- 第二：对贤德有才能的人非常嫉妒。
- 第三：听信谗言，亲近巧言谄媚的小人。
- 第四：能分析敌情，却不能正确估量自己的实力。
- 第五：遇事犹豫不决，不能果断处理。
- 第六：沉溺于酒色而不可自拔。
- 第七：为人虚假、狡诈而又胆小怕事。
- 第八：狡猾而又傲慢，不依从制度行事。
