General's Haughtiness & Generosity-Zhuge Liang

English

As the commanding general, one should not be haughty. If he is haughty, there will bound to be times when he offends people. Such actions could lead to people turning against him. As a commanding general, he should not be petty. If he is petty and does not reward his men well, his men would not give their best. If they do not give their best, the general would not be able to achieve victory. And since victory cannot be achieved the nation will weaken. If the nation weakens, it also means that the enemy has strengthened. Confucius said:"Even if one has the fine talents of Emperor Zhou, if he is arrogant and stingy, his qualities would not be noteworthy."

Modern

Original
