There are many types of proverbs in the Chinese Language. They are called either Sú Yǔ (Chinese Character:俗语) or Yàn Yǔ (Chinese Character:谚语) or Xiē Hòu Yǔ (Chinese Character:歇后语). Xie Hou Yu consist of two elements: the former segment presents a novel scenario while the latter provides the rationale thereof. One would often only state the first part, expecting the listener to know the second. For example

阎王爷摆手 -- 没救

The King of Hell is waving to you ---> No Cure.

And most of these originated from historical records and ancient works. For example the most commonly used by Chinese is from Sun Zi Art of War as seen below.

知彼知己,百战不殆

He who knows his enemy and himself well will not be defeated easily.

From: Know the Enemy-Sun Zi
